APPROACHES
TO THE VISUAL IN RELIGION
Visual media have been and remain a central aspect of religious
communication. The essays in the edited volume Approaches to
the Visual in Religion (2011) investigate visual sources and
analyse their indispensable role for understanding and interpreting
religions, their symbol systems, and the wider traditions of which
they are a part. The collection addresses in particular the methodological
challenges of adopting a comparative perspective for images. All
the contributions consider in some way how images can be analysed
comprehensively, particularly with regard to social and intellectual
settings and the religions in which the images are embedded. Accordingly,
the volume demonstrates that visual sources require varied approaches
that reach beyond the visual elements to consider also origins,
material aspects and hermeneutical effects.
